Arcange

Arcange is a French independent watch brand founded by Baptiste Labaty, whose journey into watchmaking began with a discovery in his family's attic — a 1969 Omega Seamaster that had once belonged to his grandfather. Captivated by both its classic design and the personal history encoded in the object, Labaty began accumulating vintage watches and aircraft instruments over the following years, drawn equally by the aesthetics of both worlds. That convergence of aviation and watchmaking became the founding DNA of the brand. Arcange takes its name and its spirit from Jean Mermoz — the legendary French pilot of Aéropostale, who flew the first regular airmail route across the South Atlantic in 1930 and was nicknamed 'l'Archange' (the Archangel) for his fearlessness and grace. The brand's name is a direct tribute to Mermoz: his story, his spirit, and the golden era of aviation that his flights embodied. Every design decision in the Arcange collection is informed by this heritage — the dial typography, the sector displays, the instrument-panel aesthetic that runs through both model families, and the name choices within each line.

Arcange operates with a transparency that is deliberate and stated. Components are sourced primarily in Hong Kong, with bracelets produced in France; all components are then sent to Besançon — the historic capital of French watchmaking and home to the Besançon Observatory chronometer tradition — for inspection, checking, and final assembly. Design, imagining, and prototyping (including 3D-printed case pre-prototyping) are all carried out in Reims. The brand distributes exclusively direct-to-consumer, without intermediary retail margins, enabling it to offer a quality-to-price ratio it describes as its primary commitment to buyers. A 3-year warranty and free delivery from €80 are standard across all models. The collection comprises two distinct model families. The Automatic Sector is the core collection — a line of watches whose dials draw directly from vintage aircraft instrument panels, with sector-style displays, bold typography, and the functional-aesthetic language of the cockpit translated into a wristwatch format. The sector dial format — in which specific functions or scales are displayed in distinct arced or segmented zones rather than across a uniform circular surface — is a direct reference to the altimeters, airspeed indicators, and attitude instruments that fascinated Labaty and that gave the Arcange project its visual starting point. The Selenograph is the brand's complication line, featuring a large, prominently displayed moon phase complication — the selenograph being an instrument historically used to map the surface of the Moon. The name continues Arcange's pattern of drawing from the vocabulary of precision instruments and the golden age of exploration: the moon phase complication placed in a watch named for a moon-mapping instrument is both aesthetically and conceptually coherent.
