Bühlmann Watches
Bühlmann Watches exists to put real science on the wrist — founded in 2020 in the Swiss watchmaking village of Arogno by Thomas Bühlmann, son of Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann, together with GFF Suisse SA (Watch Angels), to honor a scientific legacy that quietly reshaped an entire sport. In the 1950s, the Swiss physician Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann began pioneering research at the University Hospital of Zürich into how the human body reacts to pressure during deep dives. His resulting ZH-L decompression algorithms became the foundation of modern dive tables and, later, the dive computers used by divers worldwide — the invisible science behind nearly every recreational and technical dive made since. His theories met their proving ground in 1961, when Swiss deep-sea diver Hannes Keller, working from decompression calculations and gas mixtures Bühlmann had developed, descended with partner Damian McLeish to 220 metres (728 feet) in Lake Maggiore near Brissago — a world record for open-water diving at the time, and a demonstration of exactly how far Bühlmann's science could safely push the limits of the human body.
The brand's debut, the Decompression 01 (2022), was the first mechanical translation of Bühlmann decompression theory into a wristwatch — built not to follow conventional dive-watch codes but to make decompression logic itself mechanical and legible, developed in collaboration with Dr. Bühlmann's own scientific partners. Limited to small runs across several colorways (including a 100-piece 'Druckkammer' edition) at CHF 1,650, it sold out entirely and established the brand's founding principle before being retired. Its successor, the Decompression 02 (2025, CHF 3,990–4,490, limited to 575 pieces), refines the concept further, translating the visual language of decompression tables into a purpose-built mechanical instrument rather than a conventional dive watch dial. Bühlmann's own account of the collaboration between the scientist and Hannes Keller — chronicled in the brand's documentary 'The Quest for the Perfect Algorithm' — frames every watch as a tribute to that partnership between theory and exploration.
What distinguishes Bühlmann from typical heritage-storytelling dive brands is that its scientific claims are actively vouched for by the people who did the original work. Prof. Alessandro Marroni, founder of DAN Europe (Divers Alert Network Europe) — with whom Bühlmann has a formal research collaboration, analyzing real-world diving data to advance personalized decompression models — has described working directly with Dr. Bühlmann as formative to his own career; a portion of every Decompression 02 sale funds the DAN Medical Research Foundation, and a special DAN Members Edition carries the organization's logo on the dial. Beat Müller, a former member of Dr. Bühlmann's own research team who worked as programmer and test diver, has called the Decompression 02 'a marvellous piece of micro-machinery and Swiss precision' that reflects Bühlmann's endeavor 'in noble form.' A further partnership with CMAS Switzerland puts working divers through real-world field testing of every watch for legibility and ergonomics before release — a research-driven approach to watchmaking rare even among independents, built by a company that is, quite literally, family.
