Erwin Sattler
The Erwin Sattler manufactory was founded in Gräfelfing near Munich in 1958 by Erwin Sattler and his wife Viola, who together laid the foundations of what would become one of Germany's most respected manufacturers of precision mechanical timekeepers. From the outset the company combined a clockmaker's reverence for accuracy with a designer's concern for enduring elegance, producing timekeepers intended not merely to function across a single lifetime but to outlast generations and travel through families as objects of deepening value. Today the company remains family-owned and is managed by Stephanie Sattler-Rick, the daughter of its founders, alongside two co-owners and master clockmakers: Markus Glöggler, Head of Production, and Jürgen Kohler, Head of Development and Design — a structure that preserves the direct craftsman's accountability of its founding era while bringing modern engineering discipline to every new project.
The manufactory describes its production depth as 99% — an unusually high figure even by the standards of Haute Horlogerie, and one that reflects a level of component self-sufficiency that few German or Swiss manufacturers can match. Movements for Erwin Sattler's most complex clocks can require up to 601 parts; engraving the scales on a single dial takes approximately fifty minutes before the dial is lavishly silver-plated. Base plates are cut from hardened brass up to five millimetres thick. Every drilled hole is individually positioned and applied by CNC-controlled machine rather than by simultaneous multi-drill, a slower process that achieves greater precision. Gear wheels are milled from solid stock — not stamped — and mounted on hardened steel arbors with precision-cut pinions. Agate is used for pallet stones, and jewel bearings are set in traditional chatons or the most modern precision ball bearings. All brass components are gold-plated to protect against oxidation. The hands for each clock model require up to a full day of work: hand-domed with a file in the traditional way, sanded, polished, then heated over a gas flame until they take on a uniformly bright blue colour. The development of a new Sattler movement from conception to final encasing can take up to two years — justified, the manufactory notes, by the centuries the finished timekeeper will be expected to serve.
The collection spans eight product categories. Precision Pendulum Clocks are the technical heart of the range — wall-mounted regulators with observatory-inspired dials, open-worked to reveal the gold-plated gear train, designed to be resistant to temperature and air pressure variation and regulated to the standard of observatory timekeepers. Longcase Clocks bring the same movement quality in freestanding cabinet form. Regulator Pulley Clocks use a weight-drive system. Table Clocks offer the manufactory's quality in a smaller footprint for desk or shelf. Ship Clocks are produced for the marine and yacht interior market. Watch Winders carry the same engineering principles into motorised display cases for wristwatch collections. The Wristwatch line — the Classica Lunaris being a signature model, with its hand-painted moon phase indicator, blued hands, and Roman numeral dial — translates the manufactory's clock-making DNA into a format worn on the wrist. All categories share a common design language: a timeless, undemonstrative classicism that the manufactory considers as essential to durability as the mechanical specification itself.
