Jin-Seo 'Elliott' Kim, of South Korean heritage and based in Illinois, has been fascinated by intricate mechanisms since around age 8 — and turned that fascination into one of independent watchmaking's most unusual debuts. Kim's path into the trade is unusually well-documented for someone so young: his fascination began at eight watching a chronograph pocket watch being repaired, by fifteen he was restoring and repairing vintage watches himself, and the Theory One design work started that same year, using 3D-printed prototypes to refine the case before working with component manufacturers to produce it, all finished and assembled in the United States. He has described his approach in interviews as trying to be a mechanical artist — drawn, as he put it, to things that work without batteries or electronics, without artifice. The Theory Two's case finishing adds a technique rarely seen at this price point: alongside brushing and polishing, sections are media-blasted, a process firing fine particles at high pressure to leave a matte, textured surface that also erases any manufacturing imperfections.
