Qian Guobiao

Born in 1975 in Ninghai, Zhejiang, and known to collectors as 'A.Biao' and 'the tourbillon doctor,' Qian Guobiao is one of China's most celebrated independent watchmakers — a title earned entirely through restoration before he ever built a watch of his own. He began repairing timepieces full-time in 2005, spending years servicing and restoring highly complicated mechanical watches and developing, in the process, an uncompromising approach to finishing; in 2015 he passed China's National Senior Watch Repair Technician Examination directly at senior level, without progressing through the lower grades first. Now based in Dongguan, Guangdong, Qian channels that restorer's discipline into his own creations under a philosophy his own site calls 'Peak Modern Utilitarianism': pure function, disciplined proportions, and mechanical structure treated as design in itself, built so that clarity and restraint let the engineering speak for itself on the wrist.

His visual signature — a visible balance wheel on the dial side, contrasted with traditional finishing on the movement's reverse — runs through a small, tightly named catalogue of in-house calibres. The AB-02 'Facing the Sky' introduced a flying balance wheel on the dial in a 43mm case; its refinement, the AB-02.0 'Facing the Sky 2.0' (39mm, in-house Calibre AB-02-2.0), moved the balance to a more restrained dial-side position and was limited to just 12 pieces by subscription. The AB-03 'Double Balance Wheel' pushes the concept further still: twin balance wheels mounted on a single shared axis, one visible from the dial, the other from the caseback — a genuine architectural statement of symmetry and precision rare even among independent makers. The AB-04 Split-Seconds Chronograph, currently developed as a prototype, tackles the rattrapante complication with the same uncompromising hand-finishing, built on a modified in-house AB-04 calibre.

Every movement Qian makes is hand-wound, entirely in-house, and finished by his own hand — a one-man operation in the fullest sense, output measured in single digits to low double digits per year and priced from roughly CHF 29,000. In a Chinese independent watchmaking scene still finding its international voice, Qian's work stands out precisely because it resists spectacle: no flying tourbillons for their own sake, no gemstone excess, just visible mechanics, careful proportion, and the quiet authority of someone who spent a decade putting other watchmakers' finest work back together before he ever signed his own name to a dial.
