Raúl Tena is one of the newest voices in independent haute horlogerie — a Spanish-born former aeronautical engineer with a background in music and art who has assembled some of Switzerland's finest artisan houses around a single idea: 'Art to Watch,' the transformation of the act of measuring time into an act of self-expression. What began as an engineer's technical curiosity evolved into an artistic vocation, and the brand he founded exists, in its own words, to turn precision into poetry and mechanics into emotion. Its boldest claim is conceptual: RT presents itself as the first haute horlogerie brand that lets a collector encapsulate their life's journey on the wrist, redefining time in three dimensions — past, present, and future — through bespoke, three-dimensional Métiers d'Art scenes co-created in close dialogue between founder, master artisans, and collector. Every piece is either unique or part of a very limited edition, entirely made to measure.
The debut, The Pearl Diver — the first creation of the Art to Watch 01 collection, premiered in Dubai and limited to five pieces — shows exactly how high the bar is set. It pays tribute to the Gulf's ancestral pearl-diving tradition and to the Seddiqi family, long-standing guardians of fine watch culture in the Middle East. At its heart lies a hand-engraved gold sculpture of a diver by master engraver Olivier Kuhn, patinated to evoke the aged bronze of deep-sea artifacts, reaching toward a natural Gulf pearl selected for size and color. The luminous enamel dial with hand-rendered miniature painting comes from Atelier Miniare, ringed by a steel minute track bearing Eastern Arabic numerals — a cultural homage to the Middle East and a nod to the world premiere in Dubai. Each Pearl Diver absorbs hundreds of hours of work by master watchmakers and artisans over roughly a year, is water-resistant to a genuinely usable 50 meters, and carries a five-year guarantee.
The supplier roster reads like a who's-who of Swiss artisanal excellence. The bold 44mm case — sculptural, round-bodied, with short ergonomic lugs, offered in steel with titanium, gold, and platinum to follow — is crafted by Voutilainen & Cattin, whose double-metallization sapphire caseback conceals its screws while creating a subtle engraved-text effect. The hand-wound RT01 caliber, developed and assembled by Télôs Watch SA in collaboration with Tena, performs a refined choreography of jumping hours and retrograde trailing minutes with a power reserve exceeding 60 hours — and its decoration is hand-finished by Comblémine, Kari Voutilainen's celebrated finishing atelier. Engraving, miniature painting, enamel, guillochage: the full vocabulary of the timeless crafts, given a contemporary voice. Future Art to Watch creations will be entirely tailor-made through the brand's co-creation process — positioning Raúl Tena as a platform where a collector's individuality is not engraved onto a watch, but built into its very scene.
