Vulcain

Vulcain is one of Switzerland's oldest and most historically significant independent watch manufacturers, with a heritage stretching back to 1858 — predating even the establishment of many of the Swiss industry's most famous names. The company was founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds that year as the Manufacture Ditisheim, and the transition to the Fabrique Vulcain name came in 1898. From its earliest decades, the manufacture established itself as a serious competitor in international horological excellence: at the Paris World Fair of 1889, Vulcain won an award for a grande complication piece, La Vallée de l'Arve; at the Chicago World Fair of 1893, a further prize for high-class work in complicated watches; and at the Barcelona World Fair of 1929, the Grand Prix for its watchmaking manufacture. In 1934 the brand established a partnership with Real Madrid at the Spanish Championship, demonstrating its early reach beyond watchmaking circles. In 1940 Vulcain launched the first wristwatch chronograph in its production history.

The moment that defined Vulcain's identity for all time came in 1947, when the manufacture presented the Cricket — the world's first mechanical alarm wristwatch to produce a genuinely loud, strident, cricket-like sound audible across a room. The innovation was technically demanding: a hammer strikes a pin inside the watch, and the exterior caseback acts as a resonance chamber, amplifying the sound in a way that no earlier alarm watch had achieved. This breakthrough was paired with another Vulcain innovation patented in 1946: the Exactomatic, a device that equalises the friction on the balance wheel axis across all positions by modifying the Incabloc endstones. The Exactomatic provides more regular amplitude, greater accuracy, and better regularity across all positions — a meaningful horological improvement that made Vulcain's calibres technically as well as acoustically exceptional.

The Cricket became famous not merely as a watch but as the watch of American heads of state — a distinction that began in 1951 when President Harry S. Truman received one and extends across seven presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Clinton, and Obama, who received a bespoke Anniversary Cricket in 2009 to mark his election as the 44th president. This unbroken association with the White House earned Vulcain its enduring nickname 'The Watch for Presidents' — one of the most specific and well-documented brand identities in the history of watchmaking. In 1961 Vulcain extended the Cricket's reach into professional diving with the Cricket Nautical — a driver's watch unique in its kind, water-resistant and worn in 1966 by diver Hannes Keller to nearly 250 metres depth in Toulon, France. The manufacture launched the V11 calibre in 2004, adding a date display to the Cricket movement, and in 2005 produced the Imperial Gong — the world's first tourbillon alarm watch, a grande complication of the highest order combining the Cricket alarm mechanism with a flying tourbillon.

After a period of restructuring, Vulcain underwent a rebirth in 2002 and relocated to Le Locle, the town in the Jura mountains that shares with La Chaux-de-Fonds the title of cradle of Swiss watchmaking, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The manufacture is established in a mansion there, producing in-house mechanical movements for its entire collection. Today the collection spans seven families. The Cricket is the historic heart: four sub-lines — the Cricket President (the prestige alarm watch), Cricket Tradition, Cricket Classique, and Cricket Titane (titanium case) — all carrying the iconic alarm complication.
