Albert Villa

Albert Villa Timepieces is a small Romanian microbrand based in Bucharest — reportedly the only watch brand of its kind to emerge from Romania — founded and run by Marian Mirea, who named the brand after his grandfather, an avid watch collector whose passion for timepieces set Mirea on his own path into horology. Mirea brings an unusually direct, hands-on relationship to the craft: he is also the owner and operator of Mario Straps, an established strap and leather goods business, which means every strap that accompanies an Albert Villa watch is designed and made by Mirea's own hand rather than sourced from a third party — an integration of leatherwork and watchmaking rarely seen at this scale of independent brand. Mirea has also spoken about personally producing the dials for his watches in his own workshop, using engraving and cold-enamelling techniques rather than outsourcing dial production, giving the small operation an unusually complete in-house character for a brand of its size.

The Casablanca, the brand's debut collection, is a direct tribute to the 1942 film of the same name and its enduring theme song 'As Time Goes By' — pop-culture touchstones Mirea has cited explicitly as his inspiration. The design's true genesis, however, came from a personal trip to Morocco: while visiting the city of Casablanca itself, Mirea was captivated by the architectural richness of the Hassan II Mosque, and chose the Arabesque — one of the most recognisable motifs of Islamic art and architecture — as the dial's central leitmotif. Returning home, he translated that fascination directly into a dial design, engraving and cold-enamelling the geometric arabesque pattern himself, with fine gold wires separating fields of vivid enamel colour that repeat outward from the dial's centre in a flower-like arrangement. The Casablanca (Yellow) reference — limited to just 25 pieces and now sold out — houses this dial beneath a flush sapphire crystal in a 31mm × 46mm rectangular case, gold-coated stainless steel with a frosted finish on the upward-facing surfaces and polished bevelled edges, powered by the automatic Miyota 9038 (28,800 vph, 24 jewels, 42-hour power reserve, hacking seconds). Dauphine-style gold hands, an Art Deco 'A' monogram on the crown, and a screw-down caseback engraved with the brand name, model, and limited-edition number complete the piece — offered with a choice of Mirea's own handmade straps, including antique brown lizard, brown ostrich with yellow accents, and gold stingray.

Writing for About Timepieces, reviewer Gavin McKenzie called the Casablanca 'fun' and 'slightly crazy' — a watch whose frosted gold case and bright canary-yellow enamel dial combination he admitted he 'never in my wildest dreams would have thought to match,' while praising how naturally the rectangular case suits the geometric dial design, and noting the watch's surprisingly light, comfortable wear at just 9mm thick. Since the Casablanca, Albert Villa has released a further collection pairing round cases with exotic dials and a Swiss automatic movement, signalling a broadening of the brand's design vocabulary beyond its rectangular Art Deco debut. Albert Villa Timepieces has also been carried by The Microbrand Store, a curated retailer of independent watch brands, which has described the collection as an extraordinary modern-day homage to earlier eras of design brought to life by a genuine one-man creative and manufacturing operation.
