Arcanaut

Arcanaut was founded in Copenhagen after a 2015 bar conversation between two Danes, Anders Brandt and Simon Goldeman, turned into an all-night debate: Brandt had called out Goldeman's newly bought Swiss watch for its overcomplicated dial, poor ergonomics, and steep price, and the two decided to build something better themselves, rooted in Scandinavian design tradition rather than watchmaking convention. Three years and, in their words, thousands of failed experiments later, the Swiss-made ARC-I arrived in 2018 as a small proof-of-concept series that sold out almost immediately; its successor, the ARC-II D'Arc Matter, also sold out and marked a deliberate shift toward manufacturing based locally in Scandinavia.

The team grew accordingly: in 2020, James Thompson — known professionally as Black Badger, a renowned exotic-materials artist whose jewellery has been worn by clients including Robert Downey Jr., Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Robert De Niro — joined as part-owner and Chief of Materials Development, followed in 2022 by Rob Nudds, a WOSTEP-qualified watchmaker, former overseas account manager for NOMOS Glashütte across 17 territories, and watch journalist, who came aboard as Head of Brand Development. The name Arcanaut combines 'arcane,' for hidden knowledge, with 'naut,' for traveller — 'the fanciest way of calling ourselves nerds,' as Brandt puts it. The company, Arcanaut Group ApS, is based in Frederiksberg, Denmark, with every watch assembled in its Copenhagen workshop from largely Danish- and Swedish-made components. Arcanaut has deliberately avoided the usual dive- or pilot-watch tropes, building instead around a fully integrated, motionless square crown design the brand believes is unique in the industry, protecting the movement while giving the case its distinctly sleek, Nordic silhouette. The core Composites line carries this architecture across colourways such as D'Arc Sh'Arc, D'Arc Roast, and Klint, priced between roughly 3,918 and 4,750 euros.

The brand's signature material is Fordite, also called Detroit or Motor City Agate — genuine cured paint overspray built up in layers on Detroit automobile factory racks through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, now a finite, unreproducible material. Every Fordite dial is hand-revealed by Thompson in his workshop in Gothenburg, Sweden, sanding down layers by a process he calls closer to removal than construction, with a margin for error measured in tenths of a millimetre; no two dials are alike, and each is treated as an individual object with its own name. The current Fordite 2.0 platform lets buyers configure a 37mm or 40.5mm case, choice of handset, lume colour, and rhodium- or gold-plated chapter ring, built around the Swiss automatic La-Joux Perret G101 with 68 hours of reserve and 100 metres of water resistance, made to order over six to eight weeks and individually numbered, from around 4,000 euros. Beyond Composites and Fordite, Arcanaut's Experimental Collection continues the same exploratory approach to dial materials and design across releases including Phantom, Green Fairy, Garnet Goblin, Bonehead, and Tiger Sh'Arc, each pursuing its own unconventional material or finishing technique within the same Nordic case architecture.
