S.U.F Helsinki

SarpanevaUhrenFabrik — S.U.F. Helsinki — is the second watch brand founded by Stepan Sarpaneva, creator of the high-end Studio Sarpaneva. Where Studio Sarpaneva produces haute horlogerie at rarefied prices, S.U.F. is Finland through and through: accessible, characterful, limited-edition timepieces designed and assembled in Helsinki by the Baltic Sea.

The brand's collections draw deeply on Finnish history, mythology, and national identity. The Myrsky (Finnish for 'storm') is inspired by vintage cockpit instrumentation and honours the designers and fighter aces of Finland's WWII air force. The Vetehinen brings to life both Finland's mythological water spirit and the legendary WWII submarine of the same name. The Paroni honours motorcycle racing legend Jarno 'Paroni' Saarinen — a childhood hero of Sarpaneva's. The Flying Finn celebrates Finnish athletic speed and endurance legends. The 180 invites reflection — stop, turn 180 degrees, and see how far you've come. Kaaos tells the story of a visionary who dared to leave Switzerland and forge not one but two independent watch brands from Helsinki. There is also a charming S.U.F. x Moomin collaboration. S.U.F. also has its own merchandise line including straps and clothing.

The S.U.F. philosophy is best summed up in a single Finnish word the brand invokes often: sisu, a stubborn resilience in the face of adversity that runs through every collection. The Moomin Diver, launched in 2024, brought Tove Jansson's beloved characters to the more accessible S.U.F. line for the first time — its steel dial laser-engraved with a scene from Moomin and the Comet and then finished by hand, built up in distinct sections with a raised steel chapter ring adding three-dimensional depth over luminous seaweed, bubbles, and fish. The Vetehinen diving line, named for both Finnish mythology's water spirit and a WWII-era Finnish submarine, has drawn on a personal memory of Sarpaneva's: three decades ago, while working at Piaget, he restored stone-dial watches, an experience that resurfaced when he began setting genuine stone into Vetehinen dials — including a collaboration with Italian tattoo and design artist Mo Coppoletta, whose intricate engraving covers the entire case above a natural Tiger Iron Stone dial. The Myrsky pilot's line, named for Finland's WWII-era VL Myrsky fighter aircraft, has continued to expand in vintage-inspired limited runs like the pine-green MY-G Frostpine, while the Kaaos collection — its name meaning chaos, and its story explicitly retelling Sarpaneva's own leap from Switzerland to found not one but two independent Finnish brands — rounds out a catalogue that treats Finnish folklore, wartime engineering, and personal biography as equally valid raw material for a dial.
