Ataelier Haute Complication
Ataelier Haute Complication is the Geneva-based independent watchmaking atelier of Vladimir Victor Négault — architect, 3D modeller, and self-described 'disciple of François-Paul Journe' — founded in 2018 after fourteen years of research and development at F.P. Journe. Négault's passion for watchmaking began at the age of twelve, when he met a sixty-five-year-old rabbi who had returned to his family trade as a jeweller and watchmaker. Through that early guidance and his first set of tools, Négault discovered the history and technology of the art, setting up an improvised workbench at home to work on pocket watches, wristwatches, and alarm clocks. His professional life began as an architect and 3D modeller, and it was in that capacity that he first met François-Paul Journe in 1994, when Journe commissioned him to produce a 3D model cast for a Cartier bracelet. Two years later, Négault was working on dismantling, measuring, and transforming historic singing bird automata for Swiss companies. In 2004, Journe invited him to join the F.P. Journe manufacture's R&D department — where he worked for four years as a contractor in Paris before joining the Geneva atelier full time in 2008. Over fourteen years at FPJ, he developed 2D and 3D animated films explaining how complications and movements work, contributed to movement architecture and complication engineering, and came to regard Journe's mentorship in terms he has articulated publicly: 'Being a disciple of François-Paul Journe is not humility — it is a title of nobility.' As a tribute to his mentor, Négault named his son François-Paul. He is part of the celebrated cohort of FPJ alumni — alongside Ludovic Ballouard and Rexhep Rexhepi — who have each gone on to found defining independent brands.
In 2018 Négault left to found Ataelier Haute Complication (the spelling is deliberate, referencing the Latin-French ligature Æ). Over four years of solitary development, he designed an original series of five in-house movements based on entirely new complications. The brand launched publicly in 2022 with its debut piece: the Dual Time, a dual-timezone chronometer whose display replaces the conventional 24-hour GMT format with a 12-hour rotating disc at the top of the dial — more intuitive to read than a traditional GMT, with a distinctive day/night indicator arc for the second time zone. The subscription edition of 19 pieces was claimed immediately; piece No. 1 was purchased by Ludovic Ballouard — his first watch purchase in a decade, having also worked with Négault as a constructor and on hand design. The regular production edition of 99 pieces, priced at CHF 8,000, sold out in six days. In 2024 a 29-piece platinum edition followed at CHF 29,000, with a deep blue dial and champagne lettering. A one-of-a-kind Dual Time — Architecture Mécanique No. 1, in stainless steel, created for the ELA 2024 charity auction — sold at Christie's on 11 November 2024 for CHF 47,880, marking the brand's most public moment to date and significantly expanding its collector base globally. A China Edition, limited to 8 pieces and produced in collaboration with Independent Watcher, drew inspiration from Ru ware porcelain to integrate Chinese traditional aesthetics with the Dual Time's Swiss movement architecture.
The five planned complication families define the full scope of Négault's creative ambition. The Tourbillon à Sonnerie — offered as a 9-piece subscription and a 69-piece regular edition — features an original ringing mechanism he has named the 'Reminder of the Passing Half-Hour', with an innovative and exceptionally compact hammer-and-lever architecture. The Perpetual Calendar will house what will be the world's first true perpetual 52/53 business week calendar: all existing weekly calendar watches have required a manual corrector to skip the 53rd week in the majority of years that contain only 52 weeks; Négault's mechanism handles this transition automatically, making it the only weekly calendar that requires no manual intervention over the years. The full perpetual calendar also indicates day, date, month, and leap year. The Ringing Chronometer 'Pendule de Paris' — claimed as a world first — applies a complex acoustic architecture to a precision chronometer. The Grande Sonnerie rounds out the planned series with a completely revolutionary conception. Each movement component in every Ataelier Haute Complication watch is meticulously finished and assembled personally by Négault and his small team, ensuring the highest quality of surface work, anglage, and adjustment. Négault is also a talented guitarist, an artist in every sense.
