Fam al Hut
Fam al Hut is a young independent brand from Chongqing, China — the same mountainous, neon-drenched megacity that produced Qin Gan — founded by two young southern-Chinese creatives, Dai and Lukas. Seasoned watch collectors by passion, the pair come from outside traditional watchmaking entirely: between them they are illustrators, industrial designers, deep-space photographers, and musicians, and that art-school sensibility shows in everything the brand makes. The name comes from Fomalhaut, the brilliant white star roughly 25 light-years away in Piscis Austrinus — from the Arabic 'Fom al-Haut,' mouth of the fish, and known in Chinese tradition as Bei Luo Shi Men, the lone soldier guarding the northern gate. One founder is an avid amateur astronomer, and the choice reflects the brand's animating idea: stars are the closest thing to eternity, and 'All that exists was once imagined' is its slogan. The brand sees Chongqing itself — winding mountain roads, light rail running through buildings, fog and neon over a millennia-old city — as a mirror of its watches: futuristic outside, ultimate traditional watchmaking within.
Rather than designing a movement and wrapping a case around it, Fam al Hut works design-first: the shapes, curves, and symmetry come before the mechanics, and the movement is then engineered to fit that architecture — which is why its debut looks so cohesive. That debut, the Mark 1 Möbius, publicly launched in 2025 (with a hands-on unveiling at Time to Watches in Geneva), abandons the round, flat wristwatch entirely for a lugless, capsule-shaped case of 42.2mm × 24.3mm × 12.9mm — rising to about 17mm at a secondary sapphire bubble dome that gives the tourbillon room to breathe — yet wearing like a 36–38mm watch. The dial is split into two conceptual halves that together embody the Möbius strip's endless loop: on top, a bi-axis tourbillon (axes rotating at 60 and 150 seconds, the slower axis quickened to 90 seconds for production) in a Möbius-ribbon-shaped cage machined from a proprietary titanium alloy; below, double retrograde hour and minute displays paired with a jumping hour — a combination claimed as a first in wristwatch history. The in-house hand-wound Calibre M-01T runs at 3Hz with a 50-hour power reserve, is fully open-worked, and receives an estimated 200+ hours of hand finishing per watch; the caseback subtly echoes the gourd-shaped wine bottles of Chinese mythology. The design team at Concepto Watch Factory lent support in the brand's early stages.
The Möbius launched around USD 32,000 in stainless steel — later coverage cites USD 42,000 — with upgrade materials including tantalum alloy and, in an industry first, amorphous zirconium (bulk metallic glass), nearly as light as titanium but with a Vickers hardness of about 600. Press reaction was emphatic: Monochrome called it a new benchmark for Chinese independent watchmaking, Fratello judged the debut 'worth your attention,' and Revolution partnered on a 25-piece Nebula edition in amorphous zirconium for its 20th anniversary. The watch was entered in the 2026 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, and the brand — which sells largely direct, alongside retailers such as The Limited Edition, The Lavish Attic, and Maison de Revolution — has already teased a super-thin tourbillon as its next act. Together with Qin Gan, Fam al Hut anchors Chongqing's emergence as an unexpected capital of Chinese independent horology.
