Gear Magus is one of the most audacious value propositions in Chinese independent watchmaking — a Shanghai workshop, established in 2020, dedicated to the research and manufacture of mechanical watches that break through traditional norms, delivering complications normally reserved for six-figure haute horlogerie at prices measured in hundreds, not hundreds of thousands. The brand's mission statement is its catalogue: each 'MS' reference tackles a mechanism most enthusiasts have only read about. The MS03 'Expansion Hands' revives one of watchmaking's rarest displays — the pantograph-style telescoping hands famous from Parmigiani's Ovale Pantographe (itself born of a 1997 antique pocket-watch restoration) — in which the tips of the hands extend and retract along the track of an elliptical cam as they sweep, always reaching the oval chapter ring. Gear Magus houses its take in a 42mm × 14.5mm 316L steel case on a modified Sellita SW200 base, under sapphire, for HK$10,980 — roughly US$1,400 for a complication with essentially no peers at any price below fifty times that.

The flagship MS05 'Double Tourbillon' is more astonishing still: a genuine differential-gear double tourbillon powered by the brand's in-house MS05 caliber. Two tourbillons run from a single mainspring, each beating at 28,800 vph, their inevitably microscopic rate difference — perhaps a tenth of a hertz — reconciled by a bevel-gear differential that idles when the two rotate in step and, when they diverge, extracts energy from the faster side and feeds it to the slower, averaging the two rates for superior timekeeping. It is the same architecture celebrated in double-regulator masterpieces costing a small fortune, here in a 42mm steel case with a 50-hour power reserve at HK$28,800 (≈US$3,700). Around these anchors sit the MS06 (in black and blue, HK$10,980) and MS07, continuing the pattern of one improbable mechanism per reference.

The brand's playful streak peaks with the MS08 'Tango' — its first non-watch creation and arguably its purest expression: a mechanical clock fountain pen. Machined from aviation-grade aluminum (174.5mm long), the pen conceals a brand-new in-house miniature hand-wound movement — the MS08 caliber, 28,800 vph with a 40-hour power reserve — wound via a mechanism integrated into the end of the pen, its tiny dial (offered in black enamel with gold or silver hands, or fully skeletonized) displaying the time as you write. Launched via Kickstarter, it unites, as the brand puts it, the two great gentlemanly obsessions — fountain pens and timepieces — in a single instrument. Sold directly through the brand's online store with a two-year international warranty, Gear Magus embodies the boldest edge of China's new watchmaking wave: not imitating Swiss prestige, but democratizing Swiss complications — pantograph hands, differential tourbillons, and a wristwatch movement's soul inside a pen.
