Pequignet

Pequignet is one of the few genuinely independent French Haute Horlogerie manufactures, founded in 1973 and based in Morteau — a town in the Doubs department of Franche-Comté, in the Jura mountains of eastern France, less than ten kilometres from the Swiss border. The Jura region has been the heartland of French watchmaking for centuries and still harbours France's largest concentration of watchmakers specialising in mechanical movements; Morteau sits at the centre of this tradition. For half a century Pequignet has positioned itself as the embodiment of a distinctly French vision of horology — one that it describes as 'uninhibited Haute Horlogerie' — designing and making watches for free-minded and independent spirits who believe wearing a watch is an expression of freedom, heritage, and personality rather than mere status. All Pequignet creations are designed and assembled in its historic Morteau workshops, a commitment certified since 2014 by the prestigious Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label — France's official recognition of exceptional artisanal and industrial know-how — renewed in both 2019 and 2025.

The manufacture's defining achievement, and the one that reshaped its ambition, was the creation of the Calibre Royal® in 2011. Until that moment, mechanical movements had ceased to be made in France entirely. The Calibre Royal® ended that absence: it is the first French-made mechanical movement to integrate its watchmaking complications on a single plate, requiring 279 industrial plans, 150 dedicated tools, and the filing of 8 international patents, resulting in a 318-component movement of 31mm diameter and 5.8mm height. It beats at 3Hz, carries a large high-inertia diamond balance with bidirectional automatic winding, offers a 96-hour power reserve indicated at 8 o'clock, and displays a large double-date with instant jump — adjustable at any time without a red zone. Since 2011 four further movements have been developed entirely at the Manufacture, all components sourced from within 80km of Morteau with over 75% now French-made. The Calibre Royal® Manuel, derived from the automatic, is a hand-wound variant with 100 hours of power reserve and a small seconds at 6 o'clock (31mm × 5.43mm, 3Hz). The Calibre Initial® was designed for the Attitude collection: 28.2mm × 4.2mm, 65-hour power reserve, patented semi-instant date jump, central seconds, unusual toothed winding gear to improve efficiency and reduce wear, regulated in six positions to -4/+6 seconds per day with real-world precision frequently observed at ±2 seconds per day — 72% French-made components.

The Calibre Royal® Tourbillon is the fourth and most technically elevated: a flying tourbillon based on the Calibre Royal® architecture, 34.5mm × 6.11mm, 88+ hours power reserve, 1-minute titanium tourbillon cage with a concentric balance wheel and solid gold compensating screws, 12mg/cm² inertia, 3Hz, decorated with bevelling, Côtes de Genève, circular graining, circling, sandblasting, and hand-drawn motifs. The fifth movement — the Calibre Initial® Chronograph — was developed in 2025 in collaboration with a Swiss specialist in high-end complications, based on the Calibre Initial® with an openworked rotor bearing a raised fleur-de-lys, satin-brushed and perlage-finished mainplate and balance bridge, and diamond-polished bevels, all components sourced within 80km of Morteau.

The collection spans nine distinct lines. The Royale is the flagship family — the one that houses the Calibre Royal® in its most direct form — available across multiple executions including the Royale Origine (the definitive automatic expression), Royale Grand Sport, Royale GMT, and Royale Paris (a 39.5mm sports-dress model in a more contemporary case profile). The Royale Paris Chrono is the brand's first chronograph, launched in 2025, housing the new Calibre Initial® Chronograph in a 39.5mm case. The Royale Tourbillon is a numbered limited series housing the Calibre Royal® Tourbillon flying tourbillon — the apex of the collection and one of very few tourbillons made entirely in France. The Royale Saphir adds fully transparent sapphire crystal case elements to the Royale family, creating a highly contemporary aesthetic that reveals the movement from all angles. The Concorde is the most versatile and accessible line, available in 30mm, 36mm, and 40mm, with a broad spectrum of dial colours and most recently an expanded leather strap programme in blue, beige, dark gold, and taupe. The Attitude is the everyday automatic powered by the Calibre Initial®, positioned as Pequignet's most contemporary and wearable model. The Extrême 300 is the professional dive watch line, housing the manual Calibre Royal® Manuel in a 300-metre water-resistant case. The Moorea is the ladies' collection, with straps and dials produced in France. The Equus is the equestrian-inspired collection. Boutiques are located in Paris (60 rue de Rennes, 75006) and Besançon, with a 5-year warranty offered on all models.
