Reima Koivukoski

Reima Koivukoski is a watchmaker based in his hometown of Espoo, in southern Finland. He trained at the Finnish School of Watchmaking, then spent time in Austria working in micro-machining for Habring2, before several years in Germany in after-sales repair, restoration, and team leadership. He eventually returned to Espoo to found Koivukoski Watches, under the parent company Kronowerk Oy, where every watch is handmade in his own atelier.

The Piece Unique Skeleton pairs a skeletonised, polished stainless steel dial set with hand-polished Montana sapphire hour markers with a 38mm titanium case, part satin and part polished, weighing just 31 grams; its polished movement is visible through an open caseback. The range of materials worked entirely in-house is genuinely broad: 904L stainless steel, chosen over the more common 316L for its superior polish and corrosion resistance; tantalum, prized for its unique icy blue-grey hue and hypoallergenic properties; titanium; platinum; and 18-karat gold, worked using what Koivukoski describes as the 'Daniels method,' a nod to George Daniels' own watchmaking techniques. Hour markers are cut from ethically sourced Montana sapphire, while the Classic and Nebula lines carry genuine grand feu enamel dials, built up in successive layers fired above 800°C; hands are blued entirely by hand using the traditional technique developed in the Swiss mountains. Every watch carries a two-year international warranty.

The house's most ambitious undertaking is Resonance, built around an in-house Calibre 5001 with two separate, synchronised sub-movements — genuine mechanical resonance, a rare and demanding pursuit even among high-end independents — displaying hours, minutes, and two synchronised small seconds through a partly open dial that lets both balance wheels be watched moving in sync. It is offered in a 38mm titanium case with a polished centre and satin bezels, or a 904L stainless steel case of around 39.5mm, both with sapphire front and back and blued steel hands, its development documented step by step on the brand's own blog.
