Ressence

Founded in 2010 in Antwerp by Benoît Mintiens — an industrial designer, not a traditional watchmaker — Ressence was built on a single obsession: to make time as legible and ergonomic as possible, challenging every assumption about how a watch should look and work. The hallmark of every Ressence is the ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System): a patented arrangement of co-planar rotating discs that display hours, minutes, and seconds without traditional hands. The main disc makes one full rotation per hour; subdials rotate around their own axes simultaneously. The result eliminates parallax entirely and creates a dial that appears to float. Early models (Zero Series, Series One) had crowns; from Series Two onward, Ressence abandoned the crown entirely — the caseback acts as the setting mechanism instead. The oil-filled models (Type 3 and Type 5) take this further: 3.57ml of oil fills the watch between two sealed chambers, giving the dial an extraordinary visual depth and removing any air/glass reflection. A magnetic transmission drives the ROCS through the oil barrier; a bellows system compensates for oil volume changes with temperature; a hydraulic shock absorber prevents magnetic decoupling under impact. The eCrown® allows time-setting on oil-filled models without a crown. Power reserve is displayed by ceramic balls.

In 2025, Ressence introduced the RW-01 — their first fully in-house movement, designed specifically to power the ROCS.

Current collections include the Type 1 (round and squared), Type 2, Type 3, Type 5, Type 7, Type 8, Type 9, and Type 11 — each a distinct expression of the same philosophy.
