Stefan Ketelaars is one of the most compellingly original figures in Dutch independent watchmaking — a self-taught engineer-turned-watchmaker from Waalre in the Netherlands who bought his first mechanical wristwatch at the age of nine, spent a decade learning the craft on the side before making it his life's work, and has built a rapidly evolving body of complications of genuine originality at prices accessible to a far broader audience than the independent watchmaking world usually reaches. He studied electrical engineering for eight years and secured a position at a large blue chip corporation — only to discover that his days were dominated by meetings and paperwork rather than the technical problem-solving that drives him. On evenings and weekends he began spending increasing time on watchmaking, progressing from skeletonising simple ETA Unitas movements to developing his own complications, and in 2017, still in his mid-twenties, he left his corporate career and opened his atelier full-time at Raadhuisstraat 14 in Waalre.

The workshop is a precisely organised space: CNC machines, old but pristine lathes, a microscope, a watchmaker's bench, electroplating equipment, and a parts-cleaning installation. Crucially, some of these tools — including his CNC machines — were designed and built by Ketelaars himself to meet his specific production requirements, a level of tool-making commitment shared by almost no independent at this price point. His training is almost entirely self-taught, with the benefit of a brief internship at a Dutch watchmaker's atelier and ongoing exchange with the small but ambitious Dutch watchmaking community. He makes batches of the same components simultaneously to reduce production time — a batch of hand-engraved and lacquered globes at a time, multiple pairs of heat-blued titanium hands together — and his ability to translate an idea into a working mechanical concept has been clocked at as little as 17 days. The philosophical foundation of his work is time itself: 'time is unfathomable, it cannot be grasped, contained or controlled. It can be measured, yes, and worn on the wrist, but the progression of time is influenced by none of us.' His hobby outside the workshop — rock climbing and mountain climbing, taking him to different formations and ranges around the world — directly inspired the terrestrial globe complication that defines his most celebrated watches: an urge to capture the spirit of exploration and discovery in a single portable object worn on the wrist.

The three current collections represent a development arc from accessible entry to world-first complication. The Time in Motion is the foundational model — a flying regulator with exposed balance wheel elevated to the dial side of the watch, an offset hours-and-minutes subdial, and all the signature Ketelaars finishing on a modified ETA Unitas 6497 or 6498 base. The core innovation of the Ketelaars approach is his decision to rework the dial side of the movement rather than the caseback side — the inverse of what most modified-Unitas watchmakers do. The balance assembly is inverted from its conventional position, elevated onto the dial where it floats above the other complications, secured by a U-shaped bridge at 11 o'clock; from the back, the escapement remains visible in its usual position. The balance bridge and the back cock are both made from scratch; the gear train that drives the time display and the globe is added to the front of the movement; standard components are retained where performance is already adequate and reworked where character demands it. The 3D Terra in Motion is the model that established Ketelaars's international reputation: a 42mm × 13.5mm steel case housing a Unitas 6497 modified to include a 6.3mm hand-engraved and hand-lacquered three-dimensional globe that makes one full rotation per 24 hours, acting as a day/night indicator.

The globe is supported by an added secondary gear train linking it to the hours display; it rotates in sync with the passage of time, carrying the accumulated weight of hand finishing — each globe painted under a microscope. Time is displayed in an off-centred subdial at approximately 3 o'clock. The balance wheel floats above at the top of the dial. The movement oscillates at 21,600 A/h (3Hz) with a 46-hour power reserve and 19 jewels (two additional rubies for the globe mechanism beyond the standard 17 of the base movement). On the back: swan-neck regulator, custom frosted bridges with hand-anglaged edges and polished countersinks, black-polished screws, and large polished rubies. Extensive personalisation is available on every model: bridge finishing (circular graining, sunburst, straight graining, hand-hammered), plating (nickel for silver-toned or acid-etched for dark grey), custom nameplates, dial engraving, strap material. No two Ketelaars watches are ever exactly alike. Pricing begins at €3,800 (approximately USD 4,300) for the Time in Motion, with the 3D Terra in Motion above that, and the Terra Luna reaching approximately €8,000.

The Terra Luna is the most technically ambitious piece Ketelaars has produced and has been described by WatchTime as a world-first in watchmaking. It combines the three-dimensional rotating earth complication of the Terra in Motion with a separate three-dimensional moon phase — creating both celestial bodies simultaneously within a single watch, their relative positions visible and rotating in real time. Achieving this in a form watch of dress-watch proportions — 39mm diameter and just 9.8mm thick — required exceptional spatial engineering on a Unitas base, and the achievement has drawn comparison to the ambitions of much larger and better-resourced ateliers. The Terra Luna's dimensions alone confirm Ketelaars as a mechanical problem-solver of unusual ability: packing a dual-globe complication into a 9.8mm profile on the same base movement that the larger 3D Terra in Motion uses at 13.5mm required an entirely different approach to the movement architecture. All three collections share the same philosophy of deep customisation to individual order, production in very small numbers, lead times of approximately two to three months, and pricing that represents extraordinary value relative to the finish quality and mechanical originality. Ketelaars has stated his ambition to develop an entirely in-house movement, to eventually manufacture his own cases, and to pursue a tourbillon — goals that the trajectory of his work suggests are not merely aspirational. He is part of the Netherlands' disproportionately significant contribution to world watchmaking — a country sometimes called 'Switzerland by the Sea' — alongside Grönefeld, Christiaan van der Klaauw, Dunselman, and others who have put Dutch horology on the international independent map.
