ArtyA

ArtyA was founded in Geneva in 2009 by Yvan Arpa, a former maths teacher turned watch-industry veteran whose three-decade career includes major contributions to some of the industry's best-known names before he set out to build something defiantly his own. With ArtyA, Arpa pairs deep technical watchmaking knowledge with an explicitly art-first sensibility — the brand's motto, 'Vita brevis, ars longa' ('life is short, art endures'), sets the tone. His creative and life partner, Dominique Arpa-Cirpka, designs the brand's dials using techniques rarely if ever seen elsewhere in watchmaking: real butterfly wings, seaweed, gold leaf, natural pigments, and diamond dust among them. In 2024 the two collaborated with Philippe Dufour himself, who for the first time incorporated métiers d'art techniques — including Dominique's butterfly-wing dial work — into one of his own iconic Simplicity watches. ArtyA operates as a fully independent brand from its own ateliers in Meinier, on the outskirts of Geneva, alongside a boutique on Rue Neuve du Molard in the city center.

The collection is organized into six lines, each built around a distinct idea. Purity is the home of ArtyA's in-house tourbillon and 'Stairway to Heaven' calibers, prized for stripped-back, skeletonized architecture. Aqua covers the brand's dive watches, including sapphire-cased divers set with material like meteorite. Complexity gathers the brand's more technically intricate pieces. Luminity is built around ArtyA's micro-rotor automatic calibers. Art is the showcase for Dominique's unconventional dial work. And Complications brings together the brand's most mechanically ambitious watches, including skeletonized and minute-repeating references. Across all six, the watches are further organized by signature attributes the brand foregrounds explicitly on its own site: tourbillon, skeleton, sapphire case, chronograph, and diver.

Material innovation is one of ArtyA's clearest throughlines. The brand has worked with sapphire crystal cases for more than seven years, prizing the material's transparency and scratch resistance as a way to put the movement permanently on display; its NanoSaphir Chameleon takes this further, using a molecularly treated polycrystalline sapphire that visibly shifts color under changing light — a effect striking enough that the New York Times covered it in a 2024 feature on color-shifting watch cases. ArtyA also produced the world's first watch case made from moissanite, an extremely hard, high-dispersion mineral originally identified in meteorite material, in the Purity Moissanite created for Only Watch 2021. All movements are designed and manufactured in-house in Geneva. The flagship PUR-T1 caliber, found in the original Purity Tourbillon (44mm and 46mm cases), combines an 18mm flying tourbillon with a double barrel for a 72-hour power reserve in a fully skeletonized, hand-finished architecture; related calibers extend the same DNA into smaller Tiny Tourbillon cases (PUR-T2), curved Curvy cases (PUR-T3), and automatic-winding central-tourbillon references (PUR-T4, PUR-T5). The manually wound Stairway to Heaven calibers (PUR-HM1, plus the wavy and curvy PUR-HMS1/HMS2 variants) pursue minimalist, two-hand architecture with a free-floating escapement and the same 72-hour double-barrel reserve, finished with microbead frosting. The automatic AMR-1 and AMR-2 micro-rotor calibers, used across the Luminity collection, run a tungsten micro-rotor for 82 hours of power reserve in an ultra-thin, single- or twin-barrel format. ArtyA continues to exhibit at Watches and Wonders Geneva, most recently presenting its Complexity collection in the Carré des Horlogers.
