Berneron

Founded in September 2022 by Sylvain Berneron — a working student at BMW at 19 after training in fine arts and industrial design, then five years as a design manager at Richemont and five more as Chief Product Officer at Breitling, before deciding a large corporate structure could never give him the creative freedom he wanted. He has served on the GPHG Academy since 2023, staying active in both the industry and the collector community he now sells to. His co-founder and wife Marie-Alix trained in product development at Chanel Horlogerie before retraining entirely as an architect; she remains closely involved in Berneron's design and brand vision. The house is based in a 650m² atelier in Neuchâtel, opened in April 2025, where it makes good on a promise stricter than the Swiss watch industry's own rules — while 'Swiss made' legally requires only 60% local content, Berneron manufactures every component of every watch within the cantons of Neuchâtel and Jura.

Their governing philosophy — 'Art to Wear' and 'Derestricted Horology' — refuses convention on principle, and the debut Mirage collection (34mm and 38mm) is the clearest proof: rather than force a movement into a round case, Berneron built the case's asymmetry directly around the shape of the movement itself, letting the mechanics — an oversized barrel, a direct small seconds, a pocket-watch-style balance — dictate the silhouette rather than the other way around. The proprietary Calibre 233 that results is a study in restraint: just 2.3mm thick, 135 components, 17 jewels, a free-sprung balance, 72 hours of reserve, and an inverted handset (hour hand on top of minute) developed specifically to keep the case slim. On full-gold references like Sienna — named for the reddish-brown Renaissance pigment first used in prehistoric cave art — literally every component is 18k gold: case, dial, hands, buckle, spring bars, and the movement's own main plate and bridges, finished with guillochage, anglage, cerclage, and laser-engraved barrels. Other Mirage references carry natural stone dials — Tiger Eye, Lapis Lazuli — and lacquered colorways like Prussian Blue, each capped at 24 pieces per color per year and individually numbered; most references sell out on release.

In 2026 Berneron moved decisively beyond time-only watchmaking with the Quantième Annuel, a CHF 140,000 annual calendar two years in development and, by the house's own account, its most complicated casing project yet. Its Calibre 595 solves calendar-display legibility with a genuine engineering novelty: a 'cross architecture' built around two independent regulators — one for timekeeping, one dedicated purely to the calendar — driving four instantaneous jumping apertures, two sweeping hands, and a retrograde date. Because all four calendar displays can jump simultaneously at midnight on December 31st, the movement stores energy across four separate reserves (spanning 12 hours, 24 hours, 7 days, and 31 days) through a double barrel, so no single jump ever disturbs the movement's amplitude — 476 components and 33 jewels in an 18k gold main plate and bridges, delivering 120 hours of reserve. The case is equally inventive: a Pt950 platinum core wrapped in a removable, replaceable six-piece 904L steel 'layer' that shields the notoriously soft precious metal from scratches without sacrificing its weight and color, closed by a crown-activated officer's caseback borrowed from pocket-watch tradition. Limited to 24 pieces per year per dial color, on allocation, the Quantième Annuel marks Berneron's transition from an audacious design house into a genuine complications manufacture — still entirely under the Bernerons' own roof in Neuchâtel.
