Byrne Watch — Montres Byrne — is a Swiss independent brand founded by John Byrne and his wife Claire Cohen, whose tagline 'Haute couture mécanique' captures the fusion at the heart of the project: Swiss haute horlogerie technique in the service of a concept so original it was described by Christophe Lüthi, CEO of Temps Manufactures and creator of the Harry Winston Opus 12, as 'extraordinary horological creativity, a technical feat worthy of Haute-Horlogerie.' John Byrne's path to founding a watch brand began in the restoration of timepieces — a family history that extends some thirty years, during which he immersed himself in all watchmaking techniques, worked alongside master watchmakers capable of fabricating bespoke nano-pieces to restore family watches thought permanently lost, and built a clientele of collectors, enthusiasts, and their children who came to trust his eye and his knowledge. With all that customer experience behind him, he became obsessed with creating an extraordinary object rather than simply restoring them. He began studying Industrial Design.

The founding moment came in 2015 at the Paris Opéra, during a performance of George Balanchine's 'Apollo Musagète.' Watching the ballet, Byrne was captivated by a tableau in which four ballerinas were placed one behind the other, moving so fast that they gave the impression of being a single woman with four faces — the stroboscopic superposition of multiple presences into one. That image became the conceptual seed of the GYRO DIAL: a complication in which the mechanical movement itself changes the appearance of the dial. He shared the idea with Claire, a Retail and Luxury Specialist with a career as Retail Director for major French and international brands, who teaches at the Institut Français de la Mode and now serves as President of Byrne Watch. Together they travelled to Switzerland and were welcomed in one of the cradles of Haute Horlogerie — Fleurier, in the Val Travers — where the Montres Byrne adventure formally began.

The GYRO DIAL is the invention at the heart of every Byrne watch: a proprietary mechanical complication in which the movement drives a rotating dial element that changes the visual character of the watch face as time passes — the dial itself becomes the complication, transforming from one aesthetic state to another through the action of the movement. It took many years of development to sublimate the case design and perfect the GYRO DIAL mechanism. The collection was launched in 2021, when the GYRO DIAL entered the world of watches and, as the brand describes it, its 'enchanted merry-go-round' became fully operational. The Byrne 311 takes its design lineage from the Porsche 911 — a sporti, pure, and racy curve providing the case's dynamic design concept, with 311 being a deliberate reference to the 911's iconography. The GYRO DIAL MECA is the most technically developed reference and was nominated for the GPHG Academy in the Men's Complications category. The collection also includes: the Gyro Dial Golf Limited Edition 2024 (a themed sport edition); the Gyro Dial 311 Casino; the Gyro Dial Sport; the Gyro Dial Zero; the Gyro Dial in Pink Gold with Diamonds; the Gyro Dial Pink Gold 5N; and the Star — the brand's latest reference. An online configurator at configurator.byrnewatch.com allows prospective buyers to customise their Byrne.

The brand operates a pop-up store at 12–14 Rue Etienne Dumont in Geneva (the same street as several other independent watch ateliers and dealers in Geneva's historic Old Town). John Byrne personally attends to every detail of the design, described on the brand's website as 'obsessed with creating a watch that is surprising, elegant to wear and perfectly run-in.' Claire Cohen manages distribution, partner relations, and retail strategy. Christophe Lüthi's endorsement — from the creator of one of the most technically complex watches in the Harry Winston Opus series — carries particular weight for a brand whose central claim is technical innovation. The brand uses 'Haute couture mécanique' not as a metaphor but as a structural description: just as haute couture changes the way a garment moves on the body, the GYRO DIAL changes the way time moves across the dial.
