Carl Suchy & Söhne is one of the great recovered names in European horology — a Viennese watch maison founded in 1822 by Carl Suchy that became the most important watchmaker of the Austro-Hungarian Danube monarchy, a trusted supplier to the imperial court, and a brand whose clientele included Sigmund Freud and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The company operated stores and workshops in Vienna, Prague, and La Chaux-de-Fonds at the height of its influence, sitting at the crossroads of two great watchmaking traditions — Viennese intellectual culture and Swiss technical mastery — in the same city and era that produced Klimt, Freud, Mahler, Loos, and the architects of modern thought. It then largely disappeared from public history. In 2017, the brand was revived by CEO Robert Punkenhofer and Peter Brabeck-Letmathe — bringing a remarkable heritage back to life with a clear creative identity rooted in Viennese Modernism and a production model split between Austrian conception and Swiss and Austrian manufacture. The brand's timepieces are conceived in Vienna and manufactured carefully in Austria and Switzerland, with partners including Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier for movement development. Annual production is close to 250 pieces — strictly limited, with production cycles of three to five months per model. In 2024, Carl Suchy & Söhne received the Butterfly Mark, an independent certification for sustainability in the luxury industry — one of very few independent watch brands to hold this distinction. The brand's showroom is in Vienna; pieces are also available through select authorised retailers worldwide and the brand's own website.

The brand's design philosophy is called Viennese Modernism in action: minimalist in structure, enriched by what Punkenhofer calls 'Suchy Twists' — deliberate, specific details that give character and emotion to each piece without disrupting the formal clarity of the overall design. References flow from Vienna's architectural and cultural heritage: Adolf Loos's rigorous ornamentation philosophy, the Belvedere Palace's baroque grandeur, the rhythm of the Vienna Waltz, and the intellectual atmosphere of Fin-de-Siècle Vienna. The design language is described as carrying 'a piece of Vienna' in every piece — an idea that the city itself is the creative brief. The Waltz Nº1 is the foundational piece and the most celebrated: its defining feature is a rotating seconds disc — rather than a conventional seconds hand, a disc engraved or printed with minute indices rotates in the manner of a turntable or a spinning top beneath the dial window, producing an animated visual performance that is simultaneously classical in its reference (the waltz is Vienna's most iconic cultural expression) and mechanically unusual. The disc is driven by a module developed in partnership with Vaucher. The Waltz Nº1 Skeleton takes this architecture further by opening the movement, transforming the animated rotating disc into a piece of visible mechanical theatre.

The full collection spans five lines. The Vienna series is the flagship dress watch — architecturally influenced by Viennese Modernism, with clean dial surfaces and crisp proportions, available in Blue Danube, Night, and Day colourways at €18,900. The Belvedere is the sporty line, identified by its unique wandering date window: the date aperture shifts position across the dial face daily, giving the watch a new face every twenty-four hours — a mechanical complication that serves as the brand's most distinctive functional innovation in the dress-sport category, available in Champagne, Bordeaux, and Titan versions at €8,900. The Waltz Nº1 is the signature complication (rotating seconds disc, as described above). The Waltz Nº1 Skeleton opens the architecture. The Table Waltz is Carl Suchy & Söhne's foray into decorative timekeeping objects — table clocks housing an in-house tourbillon movement, available in strictly limited editions and representing the highest expression of the brand's ambition. Special Editions are produced in collaboration with artists, institutions, and collectors, and include the most bespoke and culturally specific pieces in the portfolio. The brand has pieces in its own archive still ticking after 200 years — a testament to the durability and quality of the original Carl Suchy tradition that the revival aims to honour and extend.
