In 2026, Dominique Renaud — a pioneering movement constructor and the watchmaker's watchmaker — launched his eponymous brand to express the most accomplished vision of his 40 years as an inventor and designer. Co-founder of the legendary Renaud & Papi manufacture in 1986 (later acquired by Audemars Piguet), architect of dozens of prestigious complications for the most illustrious watch houses, and designer of 25 calibres. Dominique Renaud has chosen the path of pure disruption through evidence — questioning the very nature of mechanics, time, and its representation. His brand operates under the umbrella of Haute Horlogerie Dominique Renaud (HHDR), the epicentre of his watchmaking ambition — a factory for ideas and creations in Tolochenaz at the heart of the Swiss watchmaking arc. HHDR deliberately broadens the traditional scope of watchmaking by bringing together nearly twenty people from diverse backgrounds — watchmakers, designers, engineers, and experts — who collaborate and explore new forms of watchmaking with rigour, consistency, and freedom. By broadening the traditional scope of watchmaking, HHDR becomes a source of ideas as much as of objects, rooted in Swiss mechanical tradition yet focused on contemporary technologies. It is the cradle of watchmaking genius — reigniting the collective spirit that Dominique Renaud embodies.

Two brands are born from HHDR: Dominique Renaud (his radical personal vision) and Renaud Tixier (the collaborative brand with Julien Tixier). 'The best way to predict the future is to invent it.' His debut Pulse 60 explores the lowest frequency in contemporary mechanical watchmaking: 1Hz — the same as a human heart at rest. Its 20mm balance wheel (marine chronometry scale) oscillates 60 times per minute; the architecture has been completely redesigned to allow over 360° amplitude without overbanking — previously impossible in traditional design. Fewer disturbances, behaviour approaching an ideal oscillator. Functions: hours/minutes at 12, natural dead half-second at 9, torque indicator at 3. The road to the brand ran through one of modern horology's great second acts. After building Renaud & Papi with Giulio Papi into the era's most prolific creative workshop for grand complications, Renaud retired in 2000 to the south of France — only to return in 2013, first as technical consultant to HYT, then with a project that announced his true ambitions: the DR01 Twelve First, unveiled in 2016 with partner Luiggino Torrigiani. The DR01 replaced the centuries-old sprung balance outright with a 'blade resonator' — a blade pivoting between opposed knife edges on V-notched ruby spheres, driven by an external crossbow-shaped spring and regulated by a lost-beat detent-style laboratory escapement — the whole assembly mounted in a sapphire tube the wearer could rotate through 360 degrees. The near-frictionless spatial pivot supported a balance some twenty times heavier than normal, ran at 5 Hz from its first test, and with minor spring changes reached 12 Hz — 86,400 beats per hour, touching record territory for a mechanical regulator. Offered as twelve fully customisable pieces at CHF 1,000,000 each, the DR01 was less a product than a manifesto: proof that the fundamentals of mechanical timekeeping still had unexplored room. Seen in that light, the Pulse 60 is its philosophical mirror — where the DR01 chased the highest frequencies, the Pulse 60 descends to the lowest, a heartbeat-slow 1 Hz — and together they bracket the conviction that has driven Renaud for four decades: that the mechanical watch is not a finished idea but an open question, best answered by the man his peers call the watchmaker's watchmaker.
