GoS Watches

GoS Watches — the brand name is an acronym of Gustafsson & Sjögren — is one of the most distinctively Nordic propositions in independent watchmaking: a Swedish atelier whose watches unite two of the oldest craft traditions in Scandinavian history, forged steel and precision horology, in a partnership that began with a chance meeting in 2007. The two men who met that year could scarcely have come from more different worlds. Johan Gustafsson was a master bladesmith, working in the violent heat and noise of his forge to hand-craft Damascus steel — a material whose strength and superiority over regular steel gave the marauding Vikings a decisive advantage over adversaries whose brittle blades could not match their fearsome longswords. Patrik Sjögren was a master watchmaker, working in the quiet precision of a watchmaker's bench, where finesse measured in microns is the currency. Their shared passion for Scandinavian craft tradition and the cultural heritage of the North was immediate and deep, and the partnership that followed produced something neither could have made alone.

Damascus steel is the material that gives every GoS watch its defining character. The process of hand-forging Damascus steel — layering multiple types of modern Swedish tool steels, folding and forge-welding them through heat and pressure, then manipulating and stretching the composite — results in each piece carrying patterns of an entirely individual character: wood grain, flowing water, frost crystals, wildflower fields. These patterns emerge from the physics of the forging process and can never be precisely recreated. The consequence for GoS is absolute: every single watch is a unique piece, as no two Damascus steel dials will ever be identical. The acid-etching process that makes the pattern visible is itself demanding — the steel is mirror polished first, then dipped in hot acid which differentially attacks certain steel types in the layered composite while leaving others untouched, revealing the pattern through differential surface relief. All surfaces where tolerances must be maintained are masked before etching to protect the watch's water resistance.

Patrik Sjögren then machines and finishes the Damascus steel — dials, bridges, rotors, and case components — applying traditional watchmaking finishing on some surfaces and leaving the raw Damascus character on others, a deliberate contrast that he and Gustafsson have always considered a core GoS aesthetic statement. Conny Persson, who has 11 awards across eight years of competitive knife-making, took over the forging of Damascus steel from Gustafsson when Sjögren became sole owner in summer 2021. The GoS guarantee for corrosion on Damascus steel parts extends to ten years, supported by evidence from the Aurora movement prototype which Sjögren carried unprotected to shows and client visits for years without any corrosion appearing.

The brand's Scandinavian cultural identity infuses every design decision, far beyond the use of Damascus steel. GoS has revived ancient Viking decorative patterns and incorporated them throughout the watch: the chapter ring on the Sarek series is inspired by Viking bracelets; crowns are shaped to resemble Viking sword hilts; hands across the collection are designed in the shape of Viking arrows or spearheads with polished raised centre ridges; case flanks on the Sarek feature elliptic 'flute' recesses each housing a 24-karat gold pin — inspired by techniques used in luxury knife-making — designed to evoke the buds of Scandinavian wildflowers. Moose leather straps, sourced locally in Sweden and tapered with snap-lock buckles, are standard across the range. The atelier and showroom are located at Stora Torget 8 in central Linköping, Sweden, where Sjögren both makes the watches and receives visitors.

The collections span six named lines, each drawing from a specific source in Nordic nature, history, or legend. The Nordic Seasons series — the original GoS collection — captures the four seasons of Scandinavia with one colour scheme and Damascus dial palette for each: winter, spring, summer, and autumn. The calibre is a Swiss manual ETA 6498 (or Unitas 6498), re-engineered with Damascus steel bridges.

The Aurora collection brought the Northern Lights to the wrist, with the fully modified Unitas 6498 at its heart: a chronometre-grade calibre modified with a three-quarter bridge made from a single solid piece of hand-forged Damascus steel, pattern-matched to the woodgrain of the GoS calibre; the bridges are mirror-polished before acid-etching reveals the Damascus pattern, requiring protection of all tolerance-critical surfaces. Solid white gold hands in the GoS sword shape, introduced on the Stockholm model, make their first appearance here. The Norrsken collection is the most technically and artistically elaborate GoS has produced, and features an exceptional constellation of collaborations: Jochen Benzinger — the celebrated German guilloché master whose work also appears on watches by Voutilainen, Urban Jürgensen, and Habring² — hand-turns a silver dial on his rose engine; the hour index recesses are filled with emerald green Badgerite, a material developed by James Thompson of Black Badger together with Swiss Super-LumiNova; a transparent index ring in Swedish Crystal is individually hand-made by master glass artisan Mikael Kenlind; and the Damascus steel is forged by Johan Gustafsson or Conny Persson and finished by Sjögren.

The movement is the GoS Calibre 03, developed by Schwarz-Etienne with a custom micro-rotor in Damascus steel. The Sarek collection, launched in 2016 and continuously evolved, takes its name from Sarek National Park in Lapland, northern Sweden — one of Europe's largest and most remote wilderness areas. The Sarek Trollius is a fully engraved variant created in collaboration with Anders Hedlund, a master engraver and knife maker: the bezel is hand-engraved with the petals of the Trollius Europaeus wildflower; the lugs are engraved; the rotor (in its traditional GoS triskele triple-drinking-horn shape with Damascus steel counterweight) is hand-engraved; and the caseback ties the whole together. The Norrsken Blue (Sarek Frost) and Sarek Midnight Blue are further dial variations within the family. The Fullerö Sword collection references the Fullerö Viking sword, discovered in a Swedish burial site. The GoS Calibre is an in-house developed movement created in partnership with Schwarz-Etienne. All new GoS watches carry a 5-year international warranty. Bespoke commissions allow clients to work directly with Sjögren and Persson to specify patterns, colours, and steel character based on Persson's extensive range of Damascus techniques.
