Massena LAB

Massena LAB is the creative outlet of William Massena, a lifelong watch collector, former retailer, consultant, and onetime Chief Operating Officer of the Geneva auction house Antiquorum. Massena discovered the early watch-collector forum TimeZone in 1995 and stayed with it for the next quarter-century, first as a moderator and then, from 2005 to 2020, as its Managing Director, helping grow it from a small enthusiast circle into one of the watch world's largest communities. His move from forum administrator to producer began in 2014, when he developed the TimeZone 20th Anniversary Habring² Chrono COS (ref. TZ20) with Richard and Maria Habring — a classic chronograph dial that took over a year to finalize and sold out within a week of its November 2015 launch — followed in 2016 by the Habring² x TimeZone Jumping Seconds (ref. TZ21), which sold out within days. Building on that momentum, Massena founded Massena LAB in 2018 as a standalone label dedicated to conceiving and developing unusual, limited-edition concepts with independent watchmakers — ideas, in Massena's words, 'beyond the offerings from their collection.' The name plays on multiple meanings at once: laboratory, label, and collaboration. The debut release, the ERWIN LAB01 with Habring², sold out within hours of launch, and its prototype later sold at Phillips in Geneva for a record price in May 2019.

Massena LAB's catalogue is built almost entirely around named collaborations with independent watchmakers and established maisons, each watch built around a distinct, often unconventional concept rather than a fixed in-house design language. Raúl Pagès has become one of the label's closest collaborators, with the Absinthe, Noctograph, and TZ30 all built around his hand-finished movements. Vianney Halter contributed the steampunk-inflected Old Soul; Sylvain Pinaud co-developed the Chronographe Monopoussoir, which won the Chronograph Watch Prize at the 2024 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, a prize shared between Pinaud and Massena himself; Angelus produced the Chronographe Télémètre; Habring² returned for the CFP; Vulcain contributed the Nautical Legacy; and the Swiss case- and dial-maker Albishorn built the Maxigraph. Massena LAB has also pursued crossovers beyond traditional haute horlogerie, including releases with the playful micro-brand Studio Underd0g, the Italian dive-watch specialist UNIMATIC (including a NASA-licensed UNIMATIC collaboration), and others drawn from across the wider independent and heritage watchmaking scene.

Beyond individual product collaborations, Massena LAB maintains a wider roster of ongoing partnerships spanning watchmakers, maisons, media, and institutions: independent watchmakers Raúl Pagès, Vianney Halter, Sylvain Pinaud, Luca Soprana, and J.N. Shapiro; established houses H. Moser & Cie., MB&F, L'Epée 1839, Louis Erard, Mathey-Tissot, and Vulcain; fellow micro-collaborators Albishorn, Angelus, UNIMATIC, Studio Underd0g, MING, and seconde/seconde/; and institutional and media partners including the Horological Society of New York, Phillips, and Revolution Magazine. Across all of it, Massena LAB positions itself less as a manufacturer in the traditional sense and more as a curator and producer — assembling a community of engaged collectors around original, conceptually driven watches that wouldn't otherwise exist within any single brand's own collection.
