Maurice de Mauriac was founded in Zurich in 1997 by Daniel Dreifuss, a former investment banker in New York who left finance behind after a market crash to pursue a passion for mechanical watches, having spent the intervening years running a white-label watch business as a designer and production intermediary working with mostly Asian factories. That grounding in production and customer behaviour shaped everything that followed: Dreifuss developed a patented interchangeable-bezel system and a modular, 'Lego-build' approach to watchmaking that let him design a customer's ideal watch with them in person, seated at the long communal table in his Zurich atelier he called the 'table university.' He reportedly aimed to sell just one watch a day.

Dreifuss died in 2023; his sons Massimo and Leonard — known within the brand as the Watchbros — had already taken over day-to-day leadership from around 2020, joined in 2023 by their sister Masha, the Watchsis, who now also runs a separate outpost, the MdM Garage, in Zurich's Züri West district. The atelier itself has since moved from its longtime home near Paradeplatz to Rämistrasse 5, in Bellevue, but the format Daniel established remains: every watch is assembled, tested, and completed by hand from hundreds of individual parts, made-to-order pieces are built for specific people or occasions, and the public can take a hands-on watchmaking course and assemble a movement themselves.

The brand's signature idea is the City Dates series, translating a city's own visual identity directly into a watch. The debut Züri-Date, launched in 2023, displays the day of the week in Zurich's own Swiss-German dialect and comes in a palette tied to specific Zurich tram lines — red for lines 2 and 15, orange for line 6, turquoise for line 14, and so on — offered in 35mm, 39mm, and 42mm cases on a Swiss automatic ETA 28.34-2 TOP movement, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, an inscribed rotor visible through the display back, and 5 ATM of water resistance, priced from 3,550 to 3,900 Swiss francs depending on the strap. The concept has since expanded to further cities, including Bärn-Date for Bern, plus editions for Basel and Zug.

Maurice de Mauriac regularly builds strictly limited editions around local partnerships: the Rallymaster Swiss Tennis, limited to 130 pieces to mark 130 years of Swiss Tennis, was presented with ambassadors including Jil Teichmann and Marc-Andrea Hüsler; a matching 130-piece Züri-Date, in FC Zürich's white and blue, individually numbered, marked the football club's own 130th anniversary. A member of the Fédération de l'industrie Horlogère Suisse, the brand continues to sell a wide range beyond City Dates — Modern, Classic, Skeleton, and Pillow-cased watches, and the L-Series developed with industrial designer Fabian Schwärzler — largely through the Zurich atelier itself, with prices across the full collection running from roughly 2,200 to 21,900 Swiss francs depending on materials and complexity.
