Metrical Watch
Metrical Watch is an independent Hong Kong watch brand founded by Paul MH Li, operating as Metrical Watch Limited. Li came to watchmaking through a personal fascination with horology: hands-on study led him to design his own watches, and the first Metrical timepiece began as a sketch. The brand's stated approach is "Heritage Meets Innovation" — drawing on 18th- and 19th-century pocket watches while pursuing original design — and its Latin motto, "Symphonia Temporis Pulsans," reflects that classical grounding. Design and direction are done in Hong Kong, with Swiss movements and Swiss Made production, which Li describes as a commitment to quality and reliability.
The debut watch, the Epiphany Origin, was inspired by how early humans learned to read time from the sun, moon and stars. Its defining feature is a sun-and-moon hour display in an aperture on the upper half of the dial: a sun travels from 6 AM to 6 PM and then becomes a moon from 6 PM to 6 AM, read against Arabic hour numerals with a slender central minute hand. The name refers both to that early realisation and to the biblical Epiphany, and subtle Christian elements — including an Ichthys fish symbol on the sapphire caseback and a star-shaped cross formed by a faceted star at the base of the dial — pay tribute to the religious origins of mechanical timekeeping. Limited to 99 pieces at CHF 2,200, the Origin sold out; Li says it did so without publicity-driven marketing, and Worn & Wound covered it in a hands-on review.
The Epiphany Twilight is the second edition, again limited to 99 pieces and priced at CHF 2,300. It keeps the 39mm 316L stainless steel case (11.4mm tall including the double-domed sapphire crystal, 5 ATM, chamfered lugs) and the Sellita SW331-2 automatic movement — 28,800 vph, 25 jewels, around 56 hours of power reserve, finished with Geneva stripes, perlage, snailing and blued screws, and visible through the sapphire caseback. The new dial is a multilayer brass construction in deep purple that reads as bright violet in strong light and nearly black in low light, with polished applied indices, a brushed chapter ring and Super-LumiNova (BGW9) on the celestial elements and hour markers. It comes on a calf leather strap (20mm tapering to 16mm) with quick-release spring bars.
Li favours slow, organic growth and a smaller base of committed collectors over hype. Every design must be one he would wear himself, and he tests 3D-printed cases with trusted people, accepting only changes that do not compromise a watch's core story. Further models are in development, some continuing the poetic themes of the Epiphany line and others exploring new design and technical directions. The brand also publishes articles on its site covering Super-LumiNova and the sacred origins of mechanical timekeeping.
