NORQAIN was launched in 2018 by Founder & CEO Ben Küffer alongside co-founders Ted Schneider and former NHL defenceman Mark Streit, positioning itself among the rare family-owned, fully independent brands left in Swiss watchmaking. Based in Nidau, at the heart of the Biel/Bienne watchmaking region, with every watch hand-assembled at the brand's production site in Tavannes in the Bernese Jura, NORQAIN builds exclusively mechanical watches — no smartwatches, no quartz — explicitly framing itself as free from shareholder pressure and therefore able to focus purely on product quality and the active, outdoor lifestyle of its community. The brand's identity runs through a four-decade family heritage in the watch industry and a logo built from two side-by-side N's forming a mountain peak, reflecting what NORQAIN describes as a brave, adventurer spirit born in the Swiss Alps. Since 2020 the house has counted watch industry veteran Jean-Claude Biver as advisor to the board, lending his experience to a stated mission of putting genuinely mechanical Swiss-made watches on the wrists of the young, the young-at-heart, and the open-minded, in an era increasingly dominated by digitalisation and smartwatches.

NORQAIN's next-level independence rests on a long-term movement partnership: in February 2020 the brand announced a collaboration with Kenissi, the Swiss movement manufacture, resulting in two proprietary calibres — the NN20/1 three-hand and NN20/2 GMT — both chronometer-certified with a 70-hour power reserve. In 2024 NORQAIN went further still, unveiling the in-house 8K Manufacture Calibre (NK24/1), developed with Manufacture AMT and named for the world's 8,000-metre peaks: a skeletonised flyback chronograph with a 62-hour reserve and a flyback function resetting and restarting at a single press, also chronometer-certified. That engineering ambition is showcased most visibly in the Wild ONE, launched in 2022 and developed in collaboration with Biver, the NORQAIN team, and Swiss supplier BIWI through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic: its shock-absorbing case is built from NORTEQ®, a proprietary carbon-fibre polymer six times lighter than steel and 3.5 times lighter than titanium, with the movement cushioned inside a titanium container by a colour-coded rubber shock absorber.

The Wild ONE's red-gold editions use PX Impact® 5N gold, sourced through Swiss partner PX Group from mercury-free, fully traceable artisanal mines that also supply the medical and aviation sectors. The line reached its logical extreme with the Wild ONE of 1 configurator — the first time, NORQAIN says, a Swiss watch company has handed customers complete A-to-Z control over their own watch, choosing across eleven steps from 18-carat red or white gold top plates, three chronometer movement options, twelve shock-absorber colours, eighteen dial choices, four NORTEQ® backplate finishes, and a sapphire caseback that can be personalised with a printed image, logo, or text, across a total of roughly 3.5 million possible configurations.

The signature NORQAIN Plate, engraved on the left flank of every model's case, extends that personal thread to the whole catalogue: owners can have it inscribed with initials, a lucky number, or a meaningful date — a wedding, a child's birthday, a summit reached — turning the watch into a running record of a life's biggest moments. NORQAIN's three core collections divide by purpose: Independence, the technical sports watch line home to the Wild ONE and Independence Skeleton; Adventure, the brand's functional sports watch range; and Freedom, its free-spirit sports watch line, including playful 'Enjoy Life' special editions and the Freedom GMT. Sustainability and ethics run throughout: the brand has offered no leather straps since 2021, relying instead on vegan-certified rubber, Milanese mesh, and perlon straps from Swiss maker BIWI, alongside straps woven from #tide ocean-recycled plastic yarn; ten percent of proceeds from its NEVEREST models support the Butterfly Help Project, founded by Norbu Sherpa and Andrea Sherpa-Zimmermann to educate the children of Sherpas lost in the Himalayas; and NORQAIN partners annually with World Cleanup Day. The brand's roster of ambassadors and partners — including footballers Gianluigi Buffon and Gary Neville, wildlife advocate Dean Schneider, and an official partnership as Luxury Sports Watch of the NHL — alongside appearances at Watches and Wonders with its alpine-inspired Ski Station booth, underscore a brand built less around watchmaking tradition for its own sake than around an unapologetically outdoor, adventure-driven idea of what a modern independent Swiss watch company can be.
