Schwarz Etienne

Founded in 1902 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Schwarz Etienne is a manufacture that designs and produces its own movements and most watch components entirely in-house at Villa Sonnenheim — a location steeped in watchmaking history. With over 120 years of uninterrupted expertise, the brand blends classic elegance with contemporary design under the motto 'Another Perception of Time.' Five collections: the 1902 (bridging heritage and renewal, with models including GMT, Petite Seconde, and Réserve de Marche); Geometry (tradition and creativity in perfect harmony between mechanics and design); Roswell (innovative contemporary lines inspired by distant worlds); La Chaux-de-Fonds (celebrating the brand's mastery of complicated watches); and the new Synergy (collaborations between the manufacture and invited independent watchmakers — the first with Peter Speake-Marin features in-house hand-wound MSE 311.00 calibre with twin barrels, 120-hour power reserve, limited to 88 pieces).

Four movement families: ASE (automatic with micro-rotor flush with bridges, variable inertia balance); MSE (manual-wind with twin barrels, six bridges with hand-polished angles, concave jewel countersinks, Côtes de Genève, rhodium-plated mainplate); TSE (tourbillon — including a flying tourbillon TSE 121.00 without upper bridge, micro-rotor front of house); and ISE (inverted movements with dial-side views of regulating organ and micro-rotor, including the ISE 100.11 with visible date mechanism). Also supplies movements to independent brands including MING.

Under Florian Brossard, appointed Managing Director in 2024, the Synergy programme has become the manufacture's clearest showcase for its own vertical integration: rather than simply supplying movements to outside brands, Schwarz Etienne now invites established independent watchmakers to design directly onto its platforms. The Roma Synergy pairs the automatic ASE 200.00 with hand-guilloché dials finished personally by Kari Voutilainen, while the newest collaboration, unveiled at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, brought English watchmaker Peter Speake to the 1902 collection with the 1902 Synergy by Peter Speake — a 39mm Grade 5 titanium case at CHF 25,500, the project growing out of Speake's earlier Tsuba watch, whose movement (built by Vaucher) first connected him with the Schwarz Etienne manufacture. The Roswell line continues to push the brand's most experimental engineering: the Roswell 08 dispenses with a conventional dial altogether to expose its entire ISE-family inverted movement and date mechanism, its bridges finished in a Matrix-inspired, code-like pattern in blue or brown, while the Roswell Voyage sets a genuine fragment of Matterhorn rock, moulded into the peak's silhouette, into its caseback and rotor. Beyond its own five collections, Schwarz Etienne has quietly built one of the industry's most extensive ghost-manufacturing client lists, having produced watches and movements for houses including Chanel, Dunhill, Mauboussin, and Caran d'Ache — proof that a 120-year-old manufacture can be simultaneously one of Swiss watchmaking's best-kept secrets and one of its busiest workshops.
