Stéphane Pierre

Stéphane Pierre is an engineer turned independent watchmaker based in Annecy, France, whose path to his own brand is one of the more unusual in contemporary independent watchmaking. He trained first in mechanics and then in micro-mechanical engineering in Besançon — a city with its own deep horological heritage — before working for a subcontractor serving the Swatch Group and then spending several years in the naval and military sector, specifically in the submarine industry. The name of his debut watch, L'Impétrant, is drawn directly from that chapter of his life: in French naval tradition, an impétrant is a young submariner assigned to a team but not yet fully integrated into it — not yet proven, but committed to earning his place. The word encapsulates both Pierre's position as a new independent entering a demanding field and the spirit of technical ambition with which he has approached it.

L'Impétrant was developed in collaboration with watchmaking prototypist Julien Tixier and realised with approximately thirty specialist contributors — all of whom Pierre credits by name, in keeping with the best traditions of independent watchmaking. The list reads as a compendium of some of the finest artisan workshops in the French and Swiss horological ecosystem, including finishing specialist Philippe Narbel, engraver Eddy Jaquet, decorator Severine Vitali, movement constructor Gaylord de Lamarlière of 109 Degrés, and a series of machining, stamping, electroerosion, and electroplating firms. The watch is made in-house in the sense that Pierre designed and developed the movement and architecture himself; the network of specialists executed and refined his vision in the way that the great independents have always worked — through trust, collaboration, and long-cultivated craft relationships.

The calibre at the heart of L'Impétrant is a manual-winding in-house movement of 295 components and 22 jewels, running at 21,600 vph (3Hz) with a 70-hour power reserve, a large 11.5mm free-sprung balance wheel with Breguet overcoil, and a Maltese cross stop-work that keeps the mainspring within the most consistent part of its torque curve. The dial side — there is no traditional dial — is a fully open, architecturally staged view of the movement, with the balance and escapement mounted dial-side up so they are visible from the front. Two enormous 19mm retrograde hands sweep across arched white zirconia ceramic subdials carrying polished bevels, one for hours and one for minutes, both resetting to zero simultaneously at twelve o'clock in a synchronised snap, with the hour hand jumping at each new hour. The power reserve is indicated by a ruby cone visible on the caseback, alongside a small seconds subdial. The 39mm, 10.8mm-thick case is Grade 23 titanium with 27 components including separately fabricated lugs assembled around a core unit, with polished concave surfaces against satin-brushed faces and sapphire crystals front and back. The initial souscription series of 15 pieces used a two-tone zirconium and rose gold case; the production series of 50 pieces is in titanium. A ruthenium-plated frosted baseplate, opulent gold jewel settings, hand-finished anglage on the steel components, and the hand-engraved model name by Eddy Jaquet complete a finish level that justifies the CHF 84,000 price point and announces Stéphane Pierre as a serious new voice in independent watchmaking.
