Vaer Watches was founded in Venice Beach, California in 2016 by Ryan Torres and Reagan Cook with a deliberately simple goal: build the perfect everyday wristwatch, one durable and versatile enough to move from the ocean to the office and everywhere in between. The founders started the company with their collective life savings, officially opened sales in 2017, and relied on the early support of family, friends, and a growing community of watch enthusiasts and outdoorsmen to get the business off the ground — a foundation that let them avoid outside investment entirely and remain, in the company's own words, proudly independent. Early prototypes were tested to genuine extremes: surf and free diving, boiling water submersion, drop testing, and even high-altitude exposure during an expedition to the Himalayas. That testing exposed a critical engineering problem — prototypes with conventional push-pull crowns, rated to 10 ATM on paper, consistently flooded under real-world conditions — which led Vaer to adopt a locking screw-down crown across its watches from the outset, a feature more typically found on luxury dive watches than on an entry-level American brand.

A second defining decision came after Vaer's difficult first year in business: rather than remain purely an assembler of imported components, the company made the consequential choice to move its watch assembly to the United States, despite the added cost and the near-total absence of an existing domestic watch manufacturing network to draw on. The first batch of American-assembled watches shipped in spring 2018, positioning Vaer as, by a wide margin, the most affordable USA-assembled watch brand on the market — a distinction the company has continued to build on with an ever-expanding lineup of American-assembled Quartz, Solar, and Automatic references. Rather than pursue bank loans or outside equity as a young, first-time-entrepreneur company, Vaer instead turned directly to its own growing customer base: the brand's first mechanical automatic lineup, launched in 2019, was funded through a Kickstarter campaign that raised USD 222,000 in thirty days — a pattern of community-funded product launches the company has repeated for major collection expansions ever since. Vaer's core product commitments remain consistent across the range: extreme water resistance suitable for daily ocean use, dual interchangeable straps for versatility, extensive USA sourcing for quality control, and a sustainability-first philosophy that treats a watch as an object meant to last decades rather than a disposable, seasonally-replaced accessory.

The current collection spans four core styles, each offered across Quartz, Solar, and Automatic movement options depending on the model. The Field Watch line — Vaer's most popular style, in slim 36mm and 40mm sizing — includes the entry-level S3 and S5 Quartz series and the American-assembled C3, C4, and C5 Solar series (models like the Tactical Field, Calendar Field, Korean Field, and Design Navy references), alongside the mechanical A5 Automatic series including the newer A5 Atlas line. The Dive Watch line runs from the affordable DS2 Quartz diver (150m water resistance, screw-down crown) through the solar-powered D4, DS4, and Outerknown collaboration references. The R1 and RS1 Chronograph lines lean into vintage 1970s motorsport styling, launched in 2022 as the brand's most successful release to date, built with sapphire crystal and precise, reliable chronograph movements timing elapsed intervals up to one hour. The G2, G5, and G7 GMT lines add dual-timezone functionality across quartz and automatic references, positioned as versatile travel companions. Vaer watches are currently worn and trusted, by the company's own account, in 79 countries and every ocean on Earth — reflected in the brand's ongoing 'Adventures' storytelling series documenting customers using their watches in genuinely demanding outdoor and marine conditions around the world. The company also participates in 1% for the Planet, directing a portion of sales toward environmental causes, and continues to fulfil and ship all orders from its Kansas City, Missouri operations.
