Santurce Collection began as a phrase, not a brand. Founded by the husband-and-wife team of José and Anita in Santurce, a neighbourhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the whole project started almost by accident: Anita asked José for more closet space, and suggested he clear a few watches out of a drawer. He began selling pieces from his own collection within the local community, and those watches came to be known by a shorthand the community coined for them — #SanturceCollection — shorthand for a genuinely good watch at a good price. It wasn't a brand yet, just a reputation: well-curated pieces, honestly priced, a true Santurce Collection. That community dynamic gradually grew into something larger — the ambition to create watches with their own identity, designed in Puerto Rico for collectors, and to put the island on the map of the horological world. Santurce Collection describes itself today as having started as a community, and insists that, at heart, it still is one. The brand's own tagline distills its identity into three words: Island. Watch. Resilience. Santurce Collection was featured by Teddy Baldassarre in its guide to the best microbrand watches of 2026.

Every Santurce Collection watch is designed entirely in Puerto Rico and assembled in the United States, with each model drawing its name and personality from Caribbean and Puerto Rican culture, wildlife, and folklore. The Picúa (Swiss automatic dive watch, 300m water resistance, $949) takes its name from the local term for barracuda — a swift, precise Caribbean predator — while El Tiburón (also a 300m Swiss automatic diver, $949) is named for the apex shark of Puerto Rican waters, both fully custom lines designed from the ground up rather than adapted from an existing case platform. The pilot watch collection is built around a piece of local folklore the brand calls 'La Batalla' — The Battle — the story of two birds who share the same Puerto Rican sky: the pitirre, small and fast, and the guaraguao, the island's red-tailed hawk. The Pitirre (Time Only, $899, and True GMT, $999) and Guaraguao (Time Only, $899, and True GMT, $999) references translate that natural rivalry into a matched pair of automatic pilot watches, with deliveries on current pre-orders estimated for summer 2026. Further references in the current lineup include Mocho, El Submarino Azul, Machete, and Edición 13. The brand also produces a dedicated line of children's watches — El Crayola, El Piecito ('the most famous corgi in Santurce'), and El Queso (Piecito's 'loyal sidekick, his younger brother') — compact 30–34mm pieces priced at $60, with a portion of El Crayola sales donated to organisations supporting individuals with autism. Santurce Collection also curates a selection of Authorized Lines from other watch brands alongside its own designs, sold directly through its own online store.

José Salas has explained the community-nickname origin with a concrete example that stuck: a Seiko Turtle sold to a friend at $150 was simply a #SanturceCollection — shorthand that needed no further explanation among the local collector circle he and his wife Anita had built through meetups and informal deals. The two describe themselves as doing everything together, watches included; Anita was already a collector when they met, and she jokes it was one of the ways she won him over. That personal, community-first identity has carried into the brand's growing catalogue: the El Tiburón dive watch has drawn comparisons to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms for its bold, utilitarian silhouette while remaining, in reviewers' words, mechanically over-specced for its price, and the brand continues to run a 'Modified Line' — taking a strong existing base design, such as the Submarino, and elevating it with Santurce's own detailing — alongside its fully custom Picúa and El Tiburón platforms built from the ground up. Deliveries on the current pilot-watch pre-orders and several dive references are estimated for summer and fall 2026, and the brand maintains a running list of press features and reviews on its own site as proof of the traction a two-person, husband-and-wife operation has built in barely two years. The tagline stitched through it all — 'El que sabe, sabe,' roughly 'those who know, know' — captures exactly the insider, community-built reputation the brand has never really left behind, even as it now ships watches worldwide.
