Earthen Co.
Earthen Co. is a Hong Kong-based watch brand founded on a simple, openly stated premise. As co-founder Johnathan Chan puts it: 'We're not watchmakers — we're collectors and designers first. Ceramic is our secret weapon: it doesn't scratch, plays with colour like no other material, and lets us reimagine classic styles for today's adventurers.' That honesty about the brand's starting point — collecting and design rather than traditional bench watchmaking — runs through Earthen's whole approach: the ambition, in the brand's own words, is to take everything they love about watches, the thrill of a vintage design and the innovation of modern materials, and make it accessible. The design philosophy is described as 'Where Landscape Meets Craft' — a conversation between wearer and surroundings that treats the watch as a companion shaped by the natural world, translating mountain ridges into sculpted bezels, shifting alpine light into the interplay of polished and matte surfaces, and the rhythm of a landscape into the contours of a case. Earthen sums up its own aesthetic direction in four words: 'Vintage Soul. Modern Armor.' The brand has been featured by Hodinkee, Monochrome Watches, Fratello, and several other specialist watch publications.
Ceramic is the material around which the entire brand is built, chosen specifically for the combination of properties it offers: lightweight yet highly resilient, and scratch-resistant in a way few other case materials can match, while also allowing for a richness and play of colour that metal cases cannot replicate. Earthen treats this not simply as a technical choice but as a statement of design intent — durability and refinement pursued simultaneously, in a material the brand describes as embodying 'where precision meets purpose and innovation ensures longevity.' As the brand puts it, self-aware about where it sits in the watchmaking landscape: 'It's not high horology, but it's daring — pushing boundaries to deliver unmatched quality at this price.'
The collection is organised into two distinct lines. The Summit Collection is Earthen's alpine-inspired pilot-watch range, described as 'a love letter to alpine adventure' — scratch-resistant ceramic cases at 38mm, powered by the automatic Miyota 9039 movement, in three references: Overcast, Whiteout, and Blue Bird, each at USD 899. The Aventurine Collection takes a more nocturnal, celestial design direction, comprising the Nightfall and Moonglow references — dial treatments built around the natural sparkle and depth of aventurine glass, evoking a starlit night sky rather than the Summit line's daylight alpine mood. Both collections are sold direct through Earthen's own online shop, with free shipping on orders over USD 500.
