Vianney Halter
Born in Suresnes on the outskirts of Paris in 1963, Vianney Halter's father was a French National Railways train driver who brought home old machines and mechanical parts — early exposure to locomotives, steam engines, and control instruments that shaped a lifelong obsession. At 14 he took the train to Paris alone and enrolled at the École Horlogère de Paris; after graduating in 1980 he spent ten years restoring antique horological items. He became an independent watchmaker in 1984.
In 1994 he founded Manufacture Janvier, developing complications for Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Jaquet Droz, and Harry Winston, and working alongside François-Paul Journe and Denis Flageollet. He also contributed the base movement for the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon. In 1998 he presented the Antiqua Perpetual Calendar at Basel — immediately described as 'a relic from the future', with four porthole displays inspired by Jules Verne and science fiction — which won him AHCI membership. In 2003 he created the Harry Winston Opus 3 (ten overlapping digital discs, jump hours, twin gear trains) with Max Büsser.

'My goal when doing watches is not to tell time or shaping a trend. I create watches because I have great fun doing so.' Fewer than 500 watches ever made.
