Vincent Calabrese

Vincent Calabrese is one of the founding fathers of modern independent watchmaking — the self-taught Neapolitan 'philosopher-creator' who co-created the AHCI itself and whose inventions became icons for Corum and Blancpain. Born in Naples in January 1944, he left school at 13, talked his way into a three-month watch-repair apprenticeship, and was repairing watches for relatives and friends before he turned 14. In November 1961 he emigrated to Le Locle, working in Swiss watch factories, and by 1972 was managing a luxury watch store in Crans-sur-Sierre — where contact with prestigious watches and wealthy clients inspired him, from 1975, to create his own. His answer was Horlogerie Spatiale — Spatial Watchmaking — movements suspended in space with no apparent physical link to the case, shaped as initials, letters, or symbols chosen by the client, entirely hand-assembled and hand-engraved, presented in gold and transparent sapphire. It won the Gold Medal at the 1977 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, and in 1980 its in-line movement, presented by Corum at the MIH in La Chaux-de-Fonds, became the Golden Bridge — to this day one of watchmaking's enduring icons. The 'Les Personnelles' letter-watches followed, including the 1982 'S' for sapphire pioneer Stettler, housed in the first sapphire case cut from a single block.

In 1985, frustrated that creators without brands or advertising budgets had no way to reach buyers, he founded the AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants, with Svend Andersen) to bring the world's independent watchmakers 'out of the shadows' — the association debuted at the Château des Monts in Le Locle with seven fellow independents and today counts some 35 members worldwide; the GPHG honored the achievement with its Special Jury Prize in 2023. His technical legacy is equally towering: for Blancpain in 1986 he created the legendary Flying Tourbillon — the flattest and smallest of its kind, with a single barrel, an 8-day power reserve, and the first tourbillon visible from the dial side — and after selling his company to Blancpain in 2006 he developed the brand's one-minute Carrousel (2007–2011), filing nine patents there among the 30-plus he holds. Between came a torrent of creations and commissions: the Baladin wandering-hours watch (1989, silver medal at the Geneva Inventions salon), the Two-Hands clock housing its entire movement inside the minute hand with a tourbillon at its tip (reprised for L'Épée in 2014 with a 40-day reserve), the jumping-hour 'Commedia' and 'Mona Lisa' of Les Philosophiques, the Janus double-faced watch for Universal Genève's centenary, the Night & Day with its 11-window AM/PM dial, plus work for Maurice Lacroix, Sarcar, Ikepod, Bell & Ross, Goldpfeil, PAMP, and Sellita, the accessible NHC (Nouvelle Horlogerie Calabrese) and ORA collections, and the Gaïa Prize from the MIH in 1996.

After returning to independence in 2012 (serving as Corum's ambassador for the relaunched Golden Bridge) and founding the Hora Nova brand in Morges in 2013, Calabrese — now in his eighties — delivered perhaps his most radical invention yet: the Calasys, conceived during the pandemic and internationally patented, a regulating system that eliminates the hairspring from the mechanical watch entirely. It earned him another Gold Medal at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2023, 46 years after his first. His workshop today produces unique, entirely handcrafted pieces across collections whose names map his mind — Spatiale, Technique, Philosophique, Ludique — each watch made by his own hands from movement to case, enameling, engraving, and gem-setting included. His credo, borrowed from Emerson, has never changed: 'Don't go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path... and leave a trail.'
