McGonigle Watches

Ireland's most important watchmaking family. Brothers John and Stephen McGonigle from Athlone are the only Irish members of the AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants). John studied at the Irish Swiss Institute of Horology, then WOSTEP in Neuchâtel, worked as a watchmaker in Bermuda, spent five pivotal years at Audemars Piguet in Le Brassus, then developed Grand Complications, Tourbillons, Automata, and Minute Repeaters with Westminster Chimes at Christophe Claret (1997–1999). Stephen co-founded the brand and splits his time between workshops in Dublin and Switzerland. In 2006, having established their individual workshops, they created McGonigle Watches together.

Their debut Tourbillon was immediately recognised as a masterpiece of craft and an exceptional debut. Current references include the Tourbillon (110-hour power reserve, one-minute tourbillon, sapphire dial), the Tuscar (in-house time-only calibre, rose and white gold — 'Bánú' means dawn in Irish), and the Ceol Minute Repeater. John has also established his own project, Oileán ('island' in Irish) — combining classical Swiss movement finishing with Celtic cultural heritage. 'Classical Swiss tradition with an Irish heart.'

The brothers' paths diverged in 2020, when John departed the namesake brand entirely to found his solo project Oileán — the name reflecting both his heritage and the fact that he now works alone. Its debut H-B1 Chronograph, limited to just eight pieces a year, is built around a heavily reworked vintage Valjoux 88 ebauche treated with the same obsessive standards John once brought to minute repeaters and tourbillons at Christophe Claret: every function polished to reduce friction, springs thinned to appropriate force, the whole movement re-engineered for smoothness rather than simply re-cased. A later Oileán model added a triple-calendar chronograph with a relief-engraved harp motif on the crown and a smoked sapphire dial revealing the day, month, and moon-phase discs beneath tinted glass. Stephen, meanwhile, has kept the McGonigle name alive and centralised operations near Neuchâtel, releasing the McGonigle Ogma — a tantalum-cased complication that took considerable searching to find a case-maker capable of the material — and, separately, launched a more accessible label called Magon, whose debut Fórsa chronograph runs a custom-decorated La Joux-Perret column-wheel calibre on a strap from the same maker who supplies Richard Mille. He has also given away, free, a Livingwatch app that animates and explains the mechanics of a minute repeater. Two brothers, two solo paths, and a shared refusal to let Ireland's only AHCI lineage produce anything less than world-class work.
